SHINE’ing the Spotlight on… Emma Isaacs

This week we SHINE the Spotlight on a lady who is seriously my ‘girl crush’ and a woman whom I even more greatly admire and respect now that I’ve read her amazing book ‘Winging It’ , which was released just last week. Emma is a force to be reckoned with and a dynamic entrepreneur; she is also one of the kindest, supportive and effervescent people you will meet and always has a smile on her face. As Mum to five gorgeous children aged between 9 years old and 11 months and wife to Rowan, Emma will unashamedly tell you that it’s not possible to ‘have it all’ at one time, but hey, we think she’s giving it a really good crack and we love that Emma is not afraid to share her experiences or stories in the hope of lifting, supporting and celebrating other women.

Hi Emma, for those that may not know you, can you tell us a little bit about your story and achievements?

My life has consisted of a series of experiences where I’ve never been fully prepared but have just jumped in all the same. I believe we learn a lot when we attempt something we don’t yet have the skills for. I was 18 when I bought into my first business – a recruitment company – and 24 when I bought Business Chicks. I really had no idea what I was doing with either of them, but was able to grow them intro successful businesses by just putting one foot in front of the other, surrounding myself with the right people and not being afraid to say, ‘heck, let’s just give it a go.’

It’s been fantastic to watch Business Chicks evolve over the years – what do you feel is their greatest success or successes to date?

When it comes down to it, I would say that my biggest achievement has been the team I’ve built and the culture we have at Business Chicks. Come into the Business Chicks office on any given day and it’s like walking into someone’s home. The whole team embodies everything we’re about at Business Chicks, which is serving our members, inspiring each other to achieve all we want to achieve and remembering to have fun in all that we do.

And are there any notable things you would do differently if you were starting again?

I feel like I got a huge jump start beginning so early but if possible I’d even work with more gusto appreciating just how precious every single moment is.

You are juggling a business empire, being Mum to five young children, friend, writer, speaker and the list goes on – what best tip serves you as to how you manage your time?

I do wake up tired most days but the routine of daily life just doesn’t allow me the space to sleep in or curl up in bed and watch Netflix. I find though, as soon as I get going (and it takes a cup of tea to kickstart me, and then later a coffee) there’s mostly no stopping me. I love my work and feel very thankful I get to spend most of my days working to my strengths. I believe when you get this opportunity, then it doesn’t feel like work. I’d do it for free! I’m very, very connected to why we do what we do at Business Chicks – it’s about being of service to women. It’s a powerful mission and one that won’t ever really, truly, fully be reached, so I’m spurred on every day to keep trying.

Aside from being energised by my work, I also just don’t try not to do too much. So I have my work and my family and I try and do those two things well. When I’m at work, I’m really at work and when I’m with my kids, I’m 100% present with them.

You always seem so calm… how do you do it?

I think calmness is a superpower and it’s definitely something I work on. For me that means not getting stressed about the things I can’t control, being pragmatic not dramatic and also not taking myself too seriously.

You’ve interviewed lots of VERY high profile celebrities – can you tell us about a couple who have made a big impact on you personally and why?

That’s like asking me to pick my favourite child! Of course I have at least twenty very worthy people twirling around inside my little head but I’d have to say Dr Brené Brown. She’s exceptional.

You’re now taking the USA by storm… what’s next for Emma Isaacs?

It’s really just more of the same. We’re lucky that as a business we’re still in growth, and we’re always innovating and creating. I just want more people to experience Business Chicks and what we can do for them and I’ve just released my first book (called Winging It) so want to sell approximately ten thousand truckloads of that too please. We also have our 9 to Thrive expos coming up in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne; we’ve just launched our first Knowledge + Study Tour (this one’s in LA and we’ve partnered up with UCLA and Disney – it’s out of this world!) and our conference Movers + Breakers in Fiji and Leadership Gathering on Necker Island are all fast approaching too. Never, ever a dull moment at Business Chicks!

What do you do in your spare time?

No such thing!

Do you have a favourite motto?

‘If it is to be, it’s up to me’. I really believe that if we want something, we’re the only ones who can really make it happen for ourselves.

Favourite food?

Does a lychee martini count?
