SHINE’ing the Spotlight on… Abigail Wake

Abigail Wake grew up in the performing arts and moved to Los Angeles at seventeen to pursue that dream professionally. She performed in several music videos with the likes of Kelly Clarkson, Daddy Yankee, and Kelly Rowland and found herself, nor surprisingly, wanting for fulfillment in the realm of acting. She can be seen in her recurring role on Kingdom and guest stars on About a Boy and Cougar Town.

She started The Awake Movement in 2014 to give a safe space for women to share their stories and truth.

2016, Abigail moved to Australia and opened her movement and empowerment studio, AWAKE STUDIO. The studio gives the community a safe space to be, let go, express and find truth in themselves through movement. The space has no mirrors, it embodies community, dance and most importantly, no judgement. She now has specialized classes for children/adults with autism, disabilities, and additional needs.

In 2021, Abigail opened her studio in Eumundi and expanding to Yandina in 2022!

“More Joy, More Love, let’s have some Fun”

Abigail, tell us about why you decided to pursue a career in the health and wellness industry?

Dance has always been part of my life. Since I was very young. I come from an abusive upbringing and dance gave me a safe space to hide. A safe space to be seen and heard. Movement for me now holds a new meaning because the safety it brought me and to bring that Joy and Light is my mission. Our bodies share a story, it deserves to be told. It is why I teach dance this way: allowing freedom.

Tell us about your ‘movement’ philosophy and how this differentiates you from others?

I suppose I’m different because I approach movement in a raw way not a technical perspective. I approach it with honesty and questions. I love asking questions. I am very curious about the Body, Stories of Them, and watching the Release that happens. I am the same way with children allowing them to move in the way they feel, less than the moves they are supposed to do. Teaches them their body is Theirs even in creation, play, and awareness in a positive way.

You have built a whole community through social marketing and focusing on promoting movement as a way to express yourself, promote, heal and feel – can you tell us a little about this and why it’s been so successful?

I’m pretty blunt. Haha. I hate to say that is why people love me or my platform but I am pretty direct. I have to be. But I am real in that way of thinking. I am honest about the body, I am honest about the world and how they see us, my mouth often gets me in trouble, but with that trouble come human beings who are ready to see the truth, who want to see real perspectives on things that matter. As Maya Angelou says ” It’s not what people do, it’s how they make you feel” I just want humans to FEEL in a world we are conditioned to not. If that is my success, then oweeeeeeeee. Let’s have some Fun.

How important is it to have a mentor and someone to coach you in areas to grow and expand?

Mentors, Therapists, Coaches, anyone that betters your existence is crucial. I have been so blessed in my life to have grown because of these type of people. I wouldn’t be the woman I am today without this guidance and support.

What do you see as being important traits of a leader?

Empathy, Integrity, and Joy. Those 3 Things are Power in a Leader.

And what’s next on the agenda for Abigail Wake?

The Awake Revival is Coming Next Year. I am now looking for a home space for movement for adults with the intention of movement, joy, and play. An inclusive space for all to be free in their body. I love dancing in church when I was a kid, it made me feel safe, I want to create that space for everyone to come alive in their bodies. My studio Awake Studio is going through a slight rebranding and looking to open another studio. I am really excited for the future of dance and the healing it will bring to so many. We all have the Joy inside us, sometimes it’s remembering it’s not lost just need to find the spark again, and once we do…it’s like lightning!
