SHINE’ing the Spotlight on… Rebecca Ramsay
From Rebecca’s first business and jobs in her teens, working corporate Australia in her 20’s, running her own business in her 30’s, now in her 40’s Rebecca loves where she has landed. Rebecca’s personal journey to understanding what makes her tick and how to contribute, uncovered her passion for understanding human behaviour and how to unlock the potential in herself and others. Rebecca straddles clinging to consistency, routine and reliability with an insatiable need to say yes to adventures that take her off the beaten track. The roles she has, allow her to contribute everyday for her family, her clients and her community.
Rebecca, tell us about Clear Light Capital and the work and services that you offer?
As a Coach to Business Owners I get to provide a space for them to explore what often gets put aside in the busyness of doing. While the focus is Business Coaching, it all comes down to the person, encouraging radical self-enquiry to explore both the strengths that support them and the blind-spots they are yet to investigate. With fresh eyes on their capacity and confidence in what they can now do, we get to explore and develop the strategies that will lead to the solutions they seek.
I work with Business Owners in growth or mature stage businesses, they are often looking to navigate the next stage of their business and their role within it. My approach with clients is Self, Strategy and Solutions and is highly customised.I am not a cookie cutter coach and this requires a leap of faith for my clients which is humbling and rewarding for us both.
Have you had to adapt or pivot your business following the recent COVID challenges?
An increase in online coaching sessions was the first shift, luckily this was just a small tweak. The regularity of my communication with clients increased 4-fold in the first couple of months and we continue to be in touch more often than before.Seeing how much momentum and results this has created has meant we will continue this model.Interestingly I think if we had discussed the increased communication before this, I feel like it might have seemed too much, too interruptive, so I am grateful to this situation for having highlighted the benefits of getting even more up close in the coaching relationship in times where momentum is needed.
What leadership traits do you feel are most important for success?
- Self-awareness – of your talents and non-talents
- Authenticity – how true you are those talents and non-talents in your roles and work.
- Empathy – that ability to have a genuine desire to understand others and using this knowledge to improve relationships, situations, and circumstances.
What career or personal achievement are you most proud of?
- Professionally I feel proud to see businesses I built or contributed to continue to thrive. A little like parenting, there is always a part of me in them.
- Personally, having my teenage daughter engage alongside me in community work both in our local community through the Buderim Foundation and on the ground with a charity we support in Uganda.
Can you share three top tips with us that will help people to thrive and adapt in the current work environment?
- Be prepared to let go of what you think you know – what if there was another way?
- Reverse engineer your plan, know the purpose of your strategies before you create them.
- Be consistently curious and committed – motivation gets you started, commitment creates results
And what’s next on the agenda for Rebecca Ramsay?
After much consideration I am working on some online programs.I often have requests from people who want to engage with some aspects of what I do but are not able to work in the 1-1 coaching relationship right now. These programs will provide fantastic tools and strategies and enable me to leverage myself into the future.
Beyond that I am excited to continue work with clients in a range of ways from exiting businesses, commercialising new innovations and growing their teams, increasing valuations and reaching their visions and dreams.
Personally I have a goal of reaching black belt in Rhee Taekwondo (currently green), continuing my mindfulness and yoga journey and somehow cataloguing the hundreds of sunrise photos I take!
Favourite book and why? –
- (non-fiction) The Book of Joy –A Conversation between the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. It presents the concepts of being the best version of yourself in an articulate, uncomplicated, and doable message. I will re-read this for life.
- (fiction) The Seven Sisters series – an amazing journey across generations and the globe, following the lives of women with powerful stories I cried and laughed with.
What’s one thing that you do for yourself every day?
I wake before everyone else in my house and practice mindfulness in one or more ways, sunrise beach walk, meditation, martial arts, yoga, having tea from a pot with a cup and saucer. Currently I am also listening to comedy every day to ensure I laugh out loud! I can recommend ‘The Guilty Feminist’ podcast.
What mantra do you live by?
This is the best I have right now, I am enough.
