SHINE’ing the Spotlight on… Kate Christie

Kate Christie is a time management specialist, best selling author of 4 books, global speaker and consultant, and the CEO and Founder of Time Stylers. Kate is the single mum of three amazing young adults who are pretty much her guinea pigs for all of her home based time investment strategies, and for some of her work based strategies too! Kate works with high performing individuals, teams and organisations to help identify and address organisational drag and poor time habits to maximise productivity and success. She has a reputation for helping her clients find 30+ hours of lost time a month to ensure they live a life they love.

Kate, what made you decide to work as a Time Management Expert?

After feeling like I had failed to successfully juggle 3 young children and my corporate career, I opted out of my wonderful career because I felt I could either be a great mum or have a great job – but not both. But I was wrong. I could have both, provided I reframed my relationship with time. I set about looking for a book with all the answers to how I could manage my time so that I could have all the bits that were most important to me along with a life I loved. However, the books I found were either full of fluff and nonsense; or took up too much of my already over-overstretched, precious time just in the reading; our were written by men (who, frankly, just didn’t ‘get it’). And so, I redesigned my time for myself. I designed a 5 step framework which worked for me, then it worked for my friends, and so I wrote a book about it and it all started from there.

What do you see as being the traits of a great leader?

Passion for your product, your business, and your people. If you have passion you can motivate yourself and your people to achieve anything.

You’ve worked in the high-flying corporate world and now on the speaking circuit – how do you look after yourself to keep you performing at your best?

I have worked out exactly how many days I need to work each month to sustain the lifestyle I love for myself and my kids. I lock that work time into my calendar, and the rest of the time is for me to spend on the things that nourish me: spending time with my family, friends, writing, reading, and travelling.

Can you share with us your top 3 tips to keep organised and on track as you would be surrounded every day by deadlines?

  1. Lock in deadlines for everything – deadlines imposed by clients are easy to meet because there are consequences if you don’t meet them. It is all the other things that don’t have externally imposed deadlines (including time for exercise, a massage, a walk with my dad) that can slip if they don’t have a deadline. So, lock them in!
  2. Focus on what is revenue generating before other tasks.
  3. Always make a To Do List.

And what’s next on the agenda for Kate Christie?

I have just released my fourth book, . It is targeted at busy working mums and debunks the crazy thinking we sometimes indulge in such as Imposter Syndrome and Mother’s Guilt; steps you through exactly how to find 30 hours of lost time a month; and then helps you set some audacious goals for that time!

Favourite book and why?

The Wolfe Hall series by Hilary Mantel – I am obsessed with all things Henry VIII and Thomas Cromwell. I have just read the 3rd book, but have read the first two many times over.

What is one thing that you do for yourself every day?

A long walk or jog.

Who would you most like to meet and why?

Reece Witherspoon – I love her energy and I would love to give her a copy of ‘Me First’.
