SHINE’ing the Spotlight on… Kym Phillips

Kym grew up in a family where her parents owned and ran a removals business. From the day she could walk, Kym developed a strong work ethic and passion for succeeding at the best of her ability from watching her lifelong role models and mentors, her parents. Kym worked in all areas of the removals industry including government departments and private companies for more than 30 years. She realised there was a void in the marketplace, and Kym knew that she could provide a service that would fill it. This was the beginning of her unique company Moving Made Easy.

Kym, tell us about how you ended up in the Moving business?

As previously mentioned, my parents owned a removals business when I was growing up. For this reason, I always felt that helping people move home or office was something I was born to do.

How do you differentiate from others that are in the same line of business?

In the residential moving space, my business is the only truly independent project managing service. No other business in Australia provides an independent project manager on site, to keep the removalist accountable and manage issues as the arise on behalf of the client. We are known for our high level of professionalism and reliability that is personalised and unique for each client.

You’ve recently expanded and taken on more opportunities… how did this come about and why?

Due to my strong connection with a national client, I was able to present a business model that is trusting and reliable. In doing so, I was contacted by the head office of Stockland to be involved in a national partnership, which was my greatest business goal. My hard work and dedication to making each move special for my clients is the reason is the reason for achieving this goal.

How important is it to have a plan and a direction?

I feel having a plan allows you to remember the reason you are working so hard. It’s easy to sometimes forget when work becomes overwhelming as to the reason you are doing what you are doing. Having a plan reminds you of your goals and where you want to be in the future, which pushes you to persevere. Much like a roadmap gives you directions, so to does a plan to steer you and your business in the right direction.

What do you see as being important traits of a leader?

I feel a leader is someone who is not afraid to stand out in the crowd for trying to make a difference. I often call myself the pink and black cow amongst the black and whites one, as I am never afraid to be who I am. When you are an industry disrupter like myself, you have to be willing to handle the negativity people will say. This builds resilience enabling you to take the risks necessary for success.

And what’s next on the agenda for Kym Phillips?

At the moment, I am focusing on securing bookings and continuing to form connections and relationships with like-minded people. Myself and my team are focusing on expanding the Moving Made Easy empire and national presence to become a household name.

Favourite movie?

My favourite movie would have to be Ride Like a Girl.

What do you do in your spare time?

Apart from spending time with my lovely family, I enjoy being outside in the fresh air and exercising.

Who do you look up to and admire?

My biggest supporters and inspirations are my parents. They are my guiding light in all I do, especially in business.
