SHINE’ing the Spotlight on… Jodie Nolan

Jodie Nolan has been in wealth management for over 20 years, and is notably one of the top advisers for a major bank, with a Master of Business (Applied Finance) and numerous awards and accolades in what is often a male dominated industry. Jodie owns a Financial Planning firm on the Sunshine Coast and solo parents two beautiful children who Jodie states are her biggest achievement as they are the most wonderful, kind and loving kids.

Jodie, have you always loved finance and economics – was it something that you always wanted to get into or when and why did you find your passion for this area?

I’ve been in the financial advice industry for 23 years and discovered my passion for global economics after the GFC in 2008. I’m fascinated by the ever evolving and highly unpredictable nature of the macro-economic environment, how it affects us here in AUS and my client’s investment decisions.

Your book Surviving the Storm is a fantastic read and a must for any person who is keen to learn more about keeping on top of their finances. What made you write this book?

I wrote it to help others after a financial loss – essentially how to ‘start again’ and build wealth, to give them confidence and hope that it is possible to recover from adversity.

Lots of people tend to avoid finances if it is not considered to be one of their ‘strengths’. How important is it for everyone to get involved and be across their numbers or is it OK to always outsource?

I believe it is really important to know your numbers – how much do you earn, how much does it cost you to live each month, to understand your ‘LVR – loan to value ratio – how much do you own verses how much do you owe’ etc. Having said that, it is also perfectly acceptable to outsource the money management, budgeting or balancing books to a professional if that isn’t one of your interests or strengths.

Tell us about your RICHMum course and the reasoning behind?

I tailored the RICHMum program to cover the basics in a quick and easy to follow format. Often women are the ones who need to manage their family finances and yet aren’t sure if they are on the right track or not. They often ask me ‘am I missing something?’ or ‘is there something else I should be doing to get ahead?’, so I designed an affordable, easy to understand program that anyone can access in their own time, at their own pace.

And what’s next on the agenda for Jodie Nolan?

I’m enjoying being a mother to my two children, running my financial planning firm and keeping up with speaking and media engagements. I’m blessed to have a busy and full life – and I’m always keen to see what opportunities present next!

Favourite book and why?

Money – Master the Game, by Tony Robbins. It’s a big book but covers many topics and reinforces my personal belief around wealth creation as Tony interviews numerous high-profile and very wealthy individuals to understand how they made their fortunes.

What is one thing that you do for yourself every day?

Walk my dog through a gorgeous rainforest environment in the mountains.

Who would you most like to meet and why?

Warren Buffett. He’s worth $80billion! AIf you get to my age in life and nobody thinks well of you, I don’t care how big your bank account is — your life is a disaster’. I love that.
