SHINE’ing the Spotlight on… Kate Langford

Kate has been managing recruitment businesses for the last 15 years both nationally and internationally and last year realised, she had a burning desire to really make a difference and share her experience and intel with as many people as she could by starting Kate Langford Career Consulting. Growing from just herself in the business April last year, to now 4 staff, as well as launching the Career Accelerator Program, has been a humbling experience for Kate and the success she has had. She has also partnered with the Sunshine Coast Council to help people in their Career Transitions and really enjoyed travelling the coast and reaching hundreds of people, by giving them the confidence they need to succeed in their own career search.

Kate, tell us what made you go into career consulting?

I have a passion for helping people gain the confidence in their career search. After working in HR and Recruitment for 15 years, I identified a gap with employees, their confidence and HOW to get a job. I woke up one day and decided that I wanted to utilise the skills and experiences I had developed throughout my time, to help change people’s lives and find them a career they love and not just what they are good at!

Do you have three tips to share as to how people can really make their Resume stand out?

  1. Format is key! No Recruiter or Hiring Manager is going to spend time reading through a resume if it doesn’t stand out in 10 seconds or less.
  2. Simple. A resume it needs to be short and sweet, nobody wants to be sitting there reading through 10 pages to work-out if you are the right fit. It needs to be straight to the point about what you can do and the skills you possess RELEVANT to the role you are aiming for.
  3. Make sure there are no spelling mistakes, attention to detail is critical.

Where do you network and is this important?

Networking is so important; building connections provides an invaluable opportunity to continue to grow within your career and achieve both personal and business goals.

I network in various locations; I love supporting and working with local businesses on the Sunshine Coast and I am also involved in the Sunshine Coast Women’s Business Network. I have also developed connections worldwide with a group of amazing entrepreneur women, and we work together to support and discuss business growth and everyday business.

What character traits are most valued by employers?

Loyalty, commitment and passion. These days it’s more about you as a person and your culture fit in the company rather than just your skills. Skills can be taught, but passion can’t be!

And what’s next on the agenda for Kate Langford?

Wow, is all I can say! I have gone from 1 to 4 staff in my first year and hope to go worldwide in the next 6 months. Large workshops are on the horizon as well as new programs to help people get into a job they love. We are also involved in some exciting training programs, partnering with other business … so watch this space!

Coast or City?

Coast any day of the week, I love spending afternoons by the beach with kids, husband and my doggies!

Favourite book and why?

The Big Leap, it’s such an inspirational read. I love self-development and learning new ways to better myself personally and in business. Mindset is everything!

What mantra do you live by?

Never say no to an opportunity, because you don’t know what will come of it!
