Elizabeth, what made you decide to pursue a career in Law?
An innate sense of curiosity. I’ve always wanted to know more about things and law was no different.
You’ve written a book to help others navigate family law – tell us a little bit about the book and the reasons behind writing?
I published Trust Yourself: How empowered decision making will help you resolve your family law matter as an information guide for those going through the family law system. A social worker colleague of mine described Trust Yourself “as a really useful reference for people going through family law difficulties. It is kind of a ‘you need to read this before you do anything’ book. But it is also something you can pick up when confronted with something new along the way.”It has a lot of helpful information in it from parenting matters, divorce, property, what happens at court and looking after yourself along the way.
Your Law Firm is celebrating its 20th year in business – how have things changed today from when you first started out?
There has been a lot of change in how we operate our business. We started with one computer for the office and being paid by cheque to very different far more flexible arrangements now. With offices in Maroochydore and Brisbane we need to be agile in how we manage our client files and client data.We are also well on our way to being paper light by mid 2019, a goal I set for the firm this year.
And what do you see as the traits that have created such longevity or generated your success?
We have great relationships with our clients. Most of our work comes from client or professional referrals so looking after our clients is key. We also have an inspired, aligned and motivated team which makes looking after our clients so much easier.
What achievement are you most proud of?
I’m most proud of my progression through the firm I now own, commencing in 2005, partnership in 2009 and then owning the firm on my own from February 2015. I’m proud of how the firm has evolved over the past 3 ½ years and the team that ensures that we keep looking after our clients.
And what’s next. You’re achieving great things, what’s next on the agenda?
At the moment I’m invested in growing our business however I have been tinkering away at my next book so we’ll see what comes of that.
Favourite place you’ve visited overseas?
In recent times Waiheke Island just out of Auckland – a small island with fabulous wine and delicious food where we truly switch off.
Coast or City?
Definitely coast – there is nothing better than starting the day with a walk on the beach with our dogs.
Favourite food?
Tough question – my husband makes a fantastic weekend breakfast of poached eggs on kale, avocado, goats cheese, pepitas and lemon oil.A fab way to start the day. The local Peregian Beach Indian butter chicken is probably the best I’ve had and the schnitzel at the Gastro pub Maroochydore is to die for.
What do you love about your job?
The thing I love the most is that sense of calm that comes over a client when they are well supported and know they are on the right track working towards resolving their matter.
