SHINE’ing the Spotlight on… Rachael Harding

Rachael Harding has been a travel industry friend of mine for a long time, and to watch this lady succeed and achieve in all she does has been fantastic to witness and she is someone whom I have admired for a long time. She is fun, witty and charming but also a hard worker, dedicated to making sure she excels in all areas of life and watching her career unfold has been terrific. She’s had a HUGE 2018 so far, so we caught up with Rachael to find out what’s been happening…

Congratulations – you’ve had a massive year. Tell us what’s been happening?

Definitely one of the bigger years in my life personally and professionally. After 15 amazing years with my previous company, it was time for a change and I’m delighted to now be leading an incredible team here in the Pacific as General Manager for Club Med.Personally, I completed my first half marathon and most importantly I have been able to share some incredible moments with my family both here at home and on various holidays.

You worked in your previous role for a number of years, what made you decide the time was right for a change?

I had been lucky enough to be exposed to various parts of the business and given the opportunity to work on additional challenging aspects locally and globally to continue to grow and develop. The time was therefore right to take my career to the next level, however it had to be more than the right role, it had to to be the right brand and lucky for me I found both at the right time.

How do you juggle being a GM who travels for business regularly and being a Mum?

I have to admit, I don’t feel as if I do this well, despite my adoring family telling me otherwise.  Like most working Mums, I constantly feel that pang of guilt that I am stretched on all fronts. So for me, it’s about always being present when we are together and making weekends really count. We also always try to have a holiday booked to look forward to as a family and knowing that time together is in the pipeline helps!Being fit also helps my mental state and approach to all aspects of my life.Being time poor, I find if I have a focus (like the 1/2 marathon) and have to train toward a goal, my competitive and determined nature kicks in and it becomes a non-negotiable part of my life

Where’s the best place you’ve travelled to in the world and why?

I get this question a lot and I find it tough.  I have been fortunate to have travelled to  over 90 countries and have genuinely  connected with each destination all  for very different reasons.  Rather than the best, one that stands out is Jordan – the juxtaposition of  deep beauty,  history and  jaw dropping ancient ruins  and then the current political and social crisis unfolding in other parts of the country is  confronting yet fascinating.

What skills do you see as most important in a Leadership type role?

For me, it’s about bringing everyone on the journey.  Therefore Communication and Transparency are key.  A good leader needs to be able to clearly and succinctly explain everything from overarching company goals and objectives, to specific tasks so each person knows not only what their role plays but how important their role is to the overall success of the business.  Bringing Positivity and Creativity also ranks highly for me along with Trustworthiness.

How do you relax?

Playing trains or dinosaurs with my son takes me away from it all, I mean this is very serious stuff when you are 3!  Running clears my head along with Pilates, and I try to meditate at night when I can.

What’s your favourite movie?

Shawshank Redemption – Besides the great storyline, the acting is exceptional by the entire cast, making you completely absorbed in their tortuous daily life, incredible friendships and bonds, and of course the ending is  unimaginable and fantastic!

Coast or City?

Big city lights, every time.

Favourite cocktail?

I am a wine girl
